Tongue piercing
How long does it take to recover from a tongue piercing?
Recovery after a tongue piercing takes between six and eight weeks, depending on how you take care of your new piercing.
Read on to find out what symptoms are typical during the healing of your piercing.
In order for your piercing to heal normally and without infections, you must follow some basic steps.
Make sure you do
- You brush your teeth twice a day every day
- Use a soft bristle toothbrush for cleaning
- Use mouthwash that does not contain alcohol
- Watch for signs of complications - especially infection
- Do not use tongue scrapers
- Don't play with the piercing
- Do not engage in French kissing or oral sex until the piercing is completely healed
- Do not smoke or drink alcohol during the healing process
Tips for long-term care
Once your piercing has healed, you should not stop maintaining oral hygiene. You can eliminate salt rinses, but be sure to maintain your oral health to prevent any problems.
You should choose only quality earrings for the tongue to prevent problems with infections in the future. Look for jewelry that is made out of steel, titanium or 14-carat gold. Other less desirable metals are more likely to cause an allergic reaction or lead to infection. Do not interrupt your regular dental checkups. Tongue piercings can increase your long-term risk of tooth trauma and gum recession. Your dentist can monitor for changes and ensure that your piercing does not cause such damage
The symptoms to watch out for.
Although tongue piercings are mild compared to other piercings, they are extremely vulnerable to infections. Poor quality jewelry and improper cleaning of the oral cavity increase the risk of infections.
Contact your doctor if:
- You experience severe pain
- Feel swelling
- Notice redness around the piercing
- Feel unusual odors
If necessary, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics to help treat the infection and prevent it from spreading. You should not remove the jewelry during this time. This will catch the infectious bacteria in your tongue and can lead to additional complications. If you decide that you want to change the earrings during the infection, you must wait until the infection is completely cleared.
